Roundup
Our September meeting was a talk by Penny Bradbury about two families from the area who were in one way or another caught up in several crimes in the area. The talk was followed with a visit to Beauchief Abbey during Sheffield heritage week.

We have now given Louise 11 Blankets for Jessops Maternity Hospital with about 4 more to be completed. We hope that our efforts will help some tiny babies.
We have had a request from Heather’s daughter who works at Sheffield Crown Court for Trauma Teddies, which they give to children who have to attend court for various reasons. They are running short of these and Heather asks if we can knit them some more. So can we please finish the blankets we are doing and then do some teddies (patterns are available) This is a good way to use up our oddments of yarn and a very worthy cause to support.
A reminder that any knitted/crocheted poppies for High Storrs School Remembrance Day need to be with Jan by early October, so they can be dropped off by the deadline at the end of October
For future knit/craft and natter dates see The Events Calendar on the homepage
Book Group
Our book for this month was Sleepyhead by Mark Billingham. The book was about a serial killer (we do love a murder), who was trying not to kill his victims but put them into a locked in syndrome state. He didn't always get it right and succeeded in killing some of the victims. Some people found the book really good and a good idea for a story. Others found it less so and a little tedious. To some people it seemed obvious by the writing style this was his first book. The book was written 20 years ago and showed the mess the NHS was in even then. The book scored 5/10.
However, one of our number (mentioning no names!), was looking totally bamboozled during the discussion, she then confessed that she had read totally the wrong book by Mark Billingham! Her book was the next in the series, which she scored 8/10.

Outings Roundup
Beauchief Abbey visit - was a follow up from the last meetings talk up led by Penny to Beauchief Abbey during Sheffield Heritage week, when the Abbey is open for public viewing. Once again Penny was able to share her knowledge about the history or the area and the people who lived there. In fact her knowledge was so good that it attracted members of the public to listen and nearly caused us to be thrown out when one of the official guides took exception to her explaining to us!
Cutlers Hall Tour was given by the archivist, who as you would expect was very knowledgeable about the history of the artefacts, paintings and development of The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, which was incorporated by act of Parliament in 1624. The first Cutlers Hall was built on the site in 1638. Most of the examples of Silverware, and a variety of knives which are on display have all been donated by previous Master Cultlers and prominent Sheffield families.
Future Outings
Pottery painting - Thursday 10th October 6pm. We have 12 of us booked on this. There are still spaces on this. Please book online. A £5 deposit is needed which will be deducted from anything you paint. We will need to finalise numbers on Thursday 3rd October so please book online or let Gill know if you would like to join us. The studio has their Christmas items in so why not join us for a relaxing evening of pottery painting and paint a Christmas bauble. The studio has hot drinks and cakes to buy. If you would like to take some wine or beer, you can do and they will provide glasses.
Behind the scenes tour of Sheffield Theatres - Saturday 12th October 10am. This event is sold out. Meeting details will be added nearer the time to a WhatsApp group.
Yorkshire Chocolate Festival - Saturday 19th October 10am at the Double Tree, Meadowhead. We get two hours to look round stalls all about chocolate. You will need to buy your own ticket for this at Yorkshire Chocolate Festival. (Approx £6) then book the event on the website so we can all meet up.
Chesterfield Observatory Visit - Monday 18th November 7pm. The cost is £70 split between anyone who books this. The cost for this outing will need to be paid at November meeting. At the moment, this is £3.50 per person. If you have booked this and can no longer make it, please let Gill know as this will affect the price everyone pays. If you cancel after October meeting and we cannot replace you, you will still need to pay. This outing is now sold out. If you would like to go, please add your name to the waiting list on the website.
Haddon Hall Christmas Market - Friday 29th November - Morning session. On this outing we visit the Christmas Market at Haddon Hall. It’s a fantastic market (better that Chatsworth) and a cheap way to see the house as the market is in the courtyard and the house. If you would like to join us, please book your ticket directly on the Haddon Hall website and book here on the website too.
2025.
2025 may seem a long time away but I am starting to look at the outings programme for next year.
Starting in February, I’m looking at one weekend outing, one evening outing per month. The evening outing could be a walk, a visit to somewhere or a meal out. I’m looking for recommendations for evening outings or meals out that would be reasonable in price and local. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. There will be a sheet on the outings desk.
If you see something you would like to do in addition to this programme, you are welcome to organise it, we can help put it on the website.
For all future outings see Upcoming Outings, book online or at the Outings Desk
Monthly Coffee mornings
October Coffee morning will be on Monday 14 October at Kollective Kitchen in Nether Edge at 10.30 am.
Why not join our Social WhatsApp group to be kept in the loop.
Charity
Our next food bank collection will be at the October meeting. Now that the weather is getting colder and winter fuel bills will bite more, the food bank anticipates a rise in those needing help throughout the winter. I know that we will all be impacted by this but every little helps even if it's only 1 item added to a weekly/monthly shop.
Things needed regularly include Tinned Food (tinned meat, fish, vegetables, soups and puddings), Pasta, Jars of Pasta Sauce, Instant mashed potato, Rice, Breakfast Cereal, UHT Milk, Tea, Coffee, Sugar, Biscuits, Snacks.
Christmas Fair Fundraising
Terminus Road, Millhouses, Christmas Market Saturday 23 November. We have booked a large pitch at this event. We will be selling the usual items: cakes, biscuits, scones, preserves, pies, Christmas crafts and a tombola. We will start to collect any non-perishable items such as crafts and tombola prizes (no alcohol) at our October & November meetings.
Holy Trinity Church Christmas Fair Saturday 30 November. We hope to have a stall again just selling crafts.
If you are willing to bake or have any craft items ready to sell please let a member of the committee know. This will help us plan these events.
