Roundup

Our speaker this month was our very own Penny Bradbury talking to us about Beauchief Abbey. Penny described how she became interested in the social history of Beauchief Abbey, whilst researching her family tree. She explained a little of the Abbeys history and its place in the area. Penny also explained a little about the process of researching historical evidence from Parish records, city and county archives. Three people in the graveyard have been researched and Penny told us about their family records and surmised lives. This was a very interesting talk about a place that many of us are very familiar with, but know very little about.

Craft Corner

Thank You to all who have made Bonding hearts for Louise at Jessops or Little hats for The Big Knit (age uk). Our next project is two fold. We will be making hats & scarf sets, a few 'good sets’ for sale at Christmas markets, but the majority to fulfil a request from one of my family members for a refuge in Chesterfield. These sets can be either for children or adults and any weight of yarn, any pattern.

Book Group

Book group This month the group read The French House by Jacquie Bloese. I think it's safe to say this book did not blow us away. However, it was an easy ready. There were not many characters to like or identify with and some not very credible. The descriptions of the place were thought to be fairly accurate. The basic story of the main characters and the details about the occupation were the most interesting part. The book scored 6.5/10 . Next month we will be reading Mrs Harris goes to Paris by Paul Gallico

Beauchief Abbey Outing

On Saturday 16 September 7 of us met Penny at Beauchief Abbey for a look round The Abbey on Heritage open day. It was nice to see some of the cottages and graves that Penny had told us about in her talk, also being able to go inside the abbey and have a good look round.
