Roundup

At the October meeting we welcomed 15 guests in response to our media campaign to attract some new members. We hope that they had an enjoyable evening and that they will come again in the future. We also welcomed a commercial company Imagination Gaming to our meeting. Most of us are familiar with the classic family games played in many households, but the games developed by this company are in a league of their own. The games were developed largely for the Education market, but also for families and community groups. The games are designed to challenge, stimulate, educate and provide fun. They brought a variety of different games with them and our ladies enjoyed playing them during the evening. Several people bought games to take home or give as presents.

Craft Corner

Jan delivered 98 poppies to High Storrs School for their poppy cascade ready for remembrance day. They were very appreciative, if a little bemused when they learnt that we didn't have children at the school! We are now busy finishing off items for sale at the November Christmas markets and making Trauma Bears for Heather's daughter to take to Sheffield Courts, where she works.

For future knit/craft and natter dates see The Events Calendar on the homepage

Book Group

This month was another classic Frenchman’s Creek by Daphne DuMaurier. Some people really didn’t like it but others loved it. Again another ‘marmite' book depending on what type of book you enjoy. It was generally agreed that it was very well written with really good descriptive writing. Gill had a picture of Jack Sparrow in her head as being the pirate!

The book scored 7/10

There will be no meeting on 20 November, due to the Christmas meal being Thursday 21 November 7pm at Kia’s Pastaria 759 - 761 Abbeydale Rd S7 2BG. Note this is a CASH ONLY venue. Please bring a wrapped book for our Christmas book swap. We will be discussing this month's book, suggesting books for next year, oh and eating as well!

Last meeting - 18 December 7.30pm Laycocks

Outings Roundup

Pottery painting -Thursday 10th October was at Budding Picassos in Woodseats. Although a lot of concentration was needed we still managed to have fun, mainly laughing at some of us who were totally inept at painting a decent image!

Behind the scenes tour of Sheffield Theatres on Saturday 12th October was a really good tour of both The Crucible Theatres and The Lyceum. We were able to visit each auditorium and then go backstage and underneath the stage to see all the mechanisms needed for scenery, backdrops and stage movement. A visit to the costume department showed us the great variety of costumes, shoes, accessories, and some props that have been used in the past for plays and pantomimes.

Yorkshire Chocolate Festival on Saturday 19th October was at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel Meadowhead. We spent an enjoyable 2 hrs sampling the chocolates, and gin, also looking at the other things on offer.

Future Outings

  • Chesterfield Observatory Visit - Monday 18th November 7pm (sold out). The cost is £3.50 per person payable at November meeting. If you have booked this and can no longer make it, please let Gill know. If you must cancel this outing and we cannot replace you, you will still need to pay. There is limited parking at the observatory so please see the guest list at the November meeting so you can arrange to share cars if possible. Please let Jan Know if you can offer a lift or would like a lift.

  • Haddon Hall Christmas Market - Friday 29th November - morning session. On this outing we will visit the Christmas Market at Haddon Hall. It’s a fantastic market (better than Chatsworth, we think) and a cheap way to see the house as the market is in the courtyard and the house. If you would like to join us, please book your ticket and book the outing online. Please let Jan Know if you can offer a lift or would like a lift.

For future outings see Upcoming Outings, book online or at the Outings Desk

Monthly Coffee mornings
  • Monday 11th December 10.15am The Cowshed & Farmshop, Moor Rd, S18 8XL.

Charity

Our next food bank collection will be at the November meeting. Now that the weather is getting colder and winter fuel bills will bite more, the food bank anticipates a rise in those needing help throughout the winter. I know that we will all be impacted by this but every little helps even if it's only 1 item added to a weekly/monthly shop.

Things needed regularly: Tinned Food (tinned meat, fish, vegetables, soups and puddings), Pasta, Jars of Pasta Sauce, Instant mashed potato, Rice, Breakfast Cereal , UHT Milk, Tea, Coffee, Sugar, Biscuits, Snacks.

Christmas Fair Fundraising
  • Henleigh Hall Christmas fair Saturday 16 November 2 - 4pm. We will be having a book stall, so if you have any books either adult or children's, fiction or non fiction that you are willing to donate please bring them to the November meeting or contact a member of the committee to arrange delivery/collection.

  • Terminus Road, Millhouses Christmas Market Saturday 23 November. We have booked a large pitch at this event. We will be selling the usual items: cakes, biscuits, scones, preserves, pies, Christmas crafts and a tombola. We will start to collect any non-perishable items such as crafts and tombola prizes (no alcohol) at our November meeting. Homemade perishables such as cakes, scones, biscuits, pies will need to be brought on the day or delivered to a member of the committee the night before.

  • Holy Trinity Christmas Fair Saturday 30 November. We hope to have a stall again just selling crafts. If you have any craft items ready to sell please let a member of the committee know, also if you can offer to help man the stalls on the day let a member of the committee know when you are available This will help with planning these events.
