Roundup

At the December meeting many members made lovely Christmas table decorations using foraged foliage, rag wreaths and hand painted glass candle holders. The ‘Bring & Share’ buffet has lots of delicious food both homemade and shop bought. It was a very relaxed atmosphere that gave our members time to chat with friends, whilst being productive at the same time.

Craft Corner

As yet I have not received any requests from charities for knitted items. Some people will be

concentrating on their own projects, whilst others are beginning to produce items to be used at fund raising markets during the coming year.

Book Group

December’s book was Poirot’s Christmas by Agatha Christie (published 1938) a classic detective crime novel. There were mixed feelings about the book, some said that it was a OK read, whilst others did not like its slow pace. It was most definitely a book of its time, reflecting the values and attitudes of the 1930s, particularly in the stereotypical portrayal of both the women and the men in the story. However, it was well written and was good from the historical aspect. It lacked the excitement and intrigue of a modern Crime novel, and perhaps not the best example of one of her Christmas themed books. The book scored 4.5. Our next book is: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Outing

On Friday 8 December a group visited Haddon Hall Christmas Market, which included lunch at the cafe. It was a lovely, if cold day which was a change from the days prior to

the visit. There were a lot of stalls selling a variety of crafts, food and drink, and some of our number (not mentioning any names) were keen to taste the variety of gins on offer!

It was also a good chance to look at the house itself for a fraction of the cost of a normal visit.

Our program of trips for next year is already underway with one already booked for Sunday 14 April 2024 to Eyam Hall cost £9, transport by car share. Eyam Hall only opens to the public twice a year so we are fortunate to have already booked a slot. If you have any suggestions of suitable visits please contact Gill.

Charity

This year we have supported Sheffield Young Carers who have an art exhibition at Weston Park Museum until 24 March. This is to celebrate 25 years of supporting young carers in our city. The pictures are a powerful portrayal of what it means to be a young carer in Sheffield. They show the positive experiences as well as the difficulties they face. Representatives from the committee have been invited to an evening at the exhibition in February and we will be organising a member's visit to Weston Park Museum to see the exhibition as part of our trips program.

NB: In March we will be choosing a new charity to support for next year., voting will take place at the beginning of February by Email. Nominations need to be submitted to me by Friday 26 January. I will need full details of the charity and their work including their Charity commission number., also a named contact and their details. Any Charity nominated needs to be local and not a National Charity.
