At January’s meeting we had a musical evening with our friend Steve Rivers, this time he brought his ‘boomwhackers’ for us to play. We were divided into groups of 3 or 4 people and each group was given a pair of tubes, each group had a different size of boomwhacker. The size of the tube differs in length, which produces the different notes when banged together. Steve then gave each section a different rhythm to play. Once we had mastered this Steve orchestrated each group to play in turn and this created the tune 'In the Jungle, the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight'. We had great fun and laughed a lot when we didn't quite get it right!

Craft Corner
Our knitter and crocheters are working on a very short charity project to make poppies for the charity Standing with Giants. They have planned to install 1475 silhouettes across the wild meadow fields of the British Normandy Memorial called ‘For your Tomorrow’. The poppies that we make will be used to surround the silhouettes at Nelson Fort in Southampton to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-day landings. If anyone requires red/black yarn or the pattern please contact Jan or Carolyn by phone/ email or at the February meeting. All poppies will need to be given to Jan or Carolyn by Friday 1 March, as they need to reach Southampton by 9 March.

Book Group
January’s book was another Classic Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
Most (but not all) have previously read this book often as far back as their school days. It had a good story line with many twists and turns. Several people commented that there were parts of the book that they did not remember. We thought that the style of writing was very ‘wordy’ often using what we would now consider to be very old fashioned, but were obviously contemporary to the day. It was definitely a book of the time, the fact that it was published as a serial rather than all the book as a whole, could have contributed to the wordiness. Most people did a lot of skimming over long descriptive passages using a multitude of adjectives that did nothing to enhance the reader's vision of what was being described.
The book scored 7.3.
Next book - The vintage shop of second chances by Libby Paige (an author we have
enjoyed in the past)

Future Outings
Our program of trips for next year is already underway with one already booked for Sunday 14 April 2024 to Eyam Hall cost £9, transport by car share. Eyam Hall only opens to the public twice a year so we are fortunate to have already booked a slot. We have also booked a return visit to the Chesterfield Observatory in November, as this proved to be a very popular visit, especially with our WI men!
The rest of the trips and walks have nearly all been booked and the list for this coming year
should be ready for publication very soon. If you have any suggestions of suitable visits please contact Gill.

Charities
This year we have supported Sheffield Young Carers who have an art exhibition at Weston Park Museum until 24 March. Gill has penciled in a group visit to Weston Park Museum on 23 March to see this exhibition. 5 charities have been nominated for your consideration for our charity for the coming year. One nomination was received after the closing date and we have decided to carry that nomination over until next year.
The nominated charities are:
1. Transport T17
Transport 17 provides group transport services to older and vulnerable people.
2. Grace Food Bank (S8)
The Grace Food Bank is a community group covering the Sheffield 8 postcode area:
3. Grow

4. Sheffield Flourish

projects.
All these charities have been scrutinised to the best of my ability and are at the time of
publishing solvent and all up to date with the Charity Commission. Further information about each of the nominated charities will be emailed to you in a separate document with instructions for voting.
