Steve will be leading this evening's walk . A donation of £5 cash is payable on the night for Weston Park Hospital.


A thousand years ago, the Shire Brook separated the ancient kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria. More recently, the Shire Brook marked the boundary between Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, until the late 1960’s, when the area around Beighton and Hackenthorpe became part of Sheffield. The Shire Brook has provided a source of water power for industry since the 16th century. By the early 1800’s, the Shire Brook powered five factories, manufacturing knives and agricultural tools. The valley was also an important area for coal production up until the 1940’s. Today, virtually all the evidence of the valley’s industrial past has disappeared, and the area has been reclaimed by nature. Wildlife habitats, waterways, and areas of woodland and meadows have taken over where forges, mills and coal mines once stood.…
